Fall Protection
Falls are among the most common causes of serious work-related injuries and deaths, yet fall protection continues to remain a frequently-cited OSHA violation. In fact, Fall Protection – General Requirements (29CFR 1926.501) lead the list of OSHA’s Top 10 most frequently cited violations for the fiscal year of 2017 with 6,072 violations.
Depending on the job, workers are oftentimes required to work on scaffolds, climb up and down ladders, walk on stairs, work in areas where there may be holes in the floor or work on elevated floors which have unprotected sides and edges. The key to protecting these employees is using the appropriate fall protection systems and equipment.
OSHA requires that fall protection be provided at elevations of four feet in general industry workplaces, five feet in shipyards, six feet in the construction industry and eight feet in longshoring operations. In addition, OSHA requires that fall protection be provided when working over dangerous equipment and machinery, regardless of the fall distance.
