Eye Protection
The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that 1,000 eye injuries occur in American workplaces every day, resulting in extensive monetary cost and an immeasurable personal toll on workers. The major types of accidents that cause blindness include objects striking the eye, contact with chemicals and other hazardous materials, being struck by objects such as chains and ropes or viewing radiant energy sources such as welding operations or lasers. Other potential hazards include exposure to dust, fumes, powders, mists, toxic gases, vapors and liquids, flying objects or particles, molten metals, electrical hazards, thermal and radiation hazards and lasers in various grinding, chiseling, sanding, hammering, spraying, welding, metal-cutting and furnace applications. Two simple preventative steps can help ensure safe work practices, including: (1) Make sure that you always wear your eye protection, and (2) Use the right protection for your application.
OSHA 29CFR 1910.133(a)(1) requires employers to ensure that each affected employee uses appropriate eye or face protection when exposed to various eye or face hazards.
